Winnats Pass and Hope Valley Loop

Make a short circuit from Castleton through the limestone cleft of Winnats Pass, then cross into the Edale valley and return through Hope. Stay on the valley through road rather than adding a diversion into Edale village. Walks and cave visits are optional additions with separate parking.

Highlights along the way

Winnats Pass

The road climbs through a striking limestone gorge west of Castleton. Photograph it from lawful access on foot after parking safely, not from a stopped vehicle in the pass.

Edale valley

The route continues into the valley beneath the Dark Peak. Any longer walk needs its own time allowance, equipment and suitable parking.

Before you set off

Winnats Pass is steep and narrow. Check suitability for your vehicle and current restrictions; take particular care around walkers, cyclists and livestock. The old landslip road below Mam Tor is not a drivable alternative. The map points mark through-road junctions, not parking places. Optional town visits may require a separate detour.
