Bwlch and Rhigos Mountain Roads
Cross two contrasting South Wales mountain-road sections on the A4061. Climb from Nantymoel over the Bwlch into the Rhondda, pass through Treorchy and Treherbert, then rise over Rhigos towards Hirwaun. Open uplands alternate with settled valleys, making a varied point-to-point drive with a natural pause between the climbs.

Highlights along the way
Bwlch crossing
The southern A4061 climb crosses the upland divide above Nantymoel. Viewpoint stops require lawful parking and suitable conditions.
Rhigos mountain road
The northern climb above Treherbert has a distinctive upland setting and hairpin section. Keep the road clear and plan photography stops separately.
Before you set off
Mountain bends, steep gradients and exposed weather require care. Follow posted limits and current restrictions, and expect cyclists, livestock and heavy vehicles. Use designated viewpoints or lawful parking; avoid stopping on hairpins or in village traffic.
