Hartside and the North Pennines
Follow the A686 from the Eden Valley over Hartside to Alston, then continue through the North Pennines towards Haydon Bridge. This is a substantial point-to-point crossing, combining the climb’s unfolding views with open high-country stretches beyond Alston. Set aside time for a break and plan your onward or return journey.

Highlights along the way
Hartside crossing
The A686 climbs out of the Eden Valley into the North Pennines. Any viewpoint stop needs a lawful parking area and suitable conditions.
Alston
The upland town offers a possible break between the two main driving sections. Park appropriately before exploring on foot.
Before you set off
The high sections are exposed to wind, fog, ice and snow. Check current conditions and closures, and keep fuel or charging needs in mind. Stay on the calculated public roads: tracks that appear to shortcut bends are not part of the route.
