Devils Staircase and Abergwesyn Pass Driving Loop

Climb the Devil’s Staircase on the Abergwesyn–Tregaron road, then return through the southern Cambrian countryside. This circuit gives the narrow mountain road room to stand out, rather than treating it as a quick shortcut.

Highlights along the way

Abergwesyn Pass

The narrow mountain through-road links the Abergwesyn and Tregaron sides.

Devils Staircase

The steep hairpin climb is a signature section of the Abergwesyn mountain road.

Before you set off

Very steep hairpins and narrow sections can be unsuitable for large vehicles or trailers. Avoid poor weather and allow ample time for the mountain section. Check current road closures, vehicle suitability and weather before travel. Driving time excludes stops and live traffic. The route follows through-roads; all visits off the line are independent optional detours.
